China Arrival Card: How to Fill It In, Field by Field

Everyone entering mainland China fills in an arrival card – visa-free travellers too. Since 20 Nov 2025 China’s digital arrival card (sometimes called the China entry card) can be filled in online before you fly, on the official form of China’s National Immigration Administration at s.nia.gov.cn/ArrivalCardFillingPC/. It is free, takes about five minutes and ends with a receipt and a QR code. This page explains every field, shows the mistakes the form lets through, and lets you practise the whole thing first.

Free of charge

Only on s.nia.gov.cn. A site that asks for money is not the official one.

Up to 3 months ahead

The form’s date picker goes that far – not just 72 hours, as many guides say.

13 languages, English included

Switch in the menu at the top. No German, Dutch or Italian.

Family: up to 10 companions

On one submission – if they have the same nationality as you.

What to have ready

The form doesn’t save drafts. Have these six things in front of you before you start, and it is done in one go:

  1. 1Your passportYou photograph the page with your picture; the form reads name, birth date, nationality and number from it.
  2. 2The flight that lands in ChinaFlight number and arrival airport – the first airport in mainland China, not your final destination.
  3. 3The address of your first nightStreet, number and district, copied from your hotel booking.
  4. 4Your mobile numberWith the country code: +44, +49, +1 …
  5. 5An email addressOptional, but the receipt can be sent there.
  6. 6Your flight outDate and flight number. Required for 240-hour transit, useful for everyone else.

Worth the five minutes: 15.55 million foreign travellers filled in the card online in the first six months, and at China’s airports more than 70% now do – China’s National Immigration Administration reckons it saves 3 to 5 minutes per traveller at the busiest ports.

Practise the arrival card: six steps, nothing sent

A copy of the official phone form, field for field, with the same checks: it deletes letters it doesn’t accept, wants the flight that lands in China, and only offers dates up to 3 months ahead. Click through Anna’s example, or switch to your own trip – then print the cheat sheet at the end. Nothing you type leaves this page, and we never ask for your passport number. The practice screens are simplified; the airport and category lists on the real form come from the immigration server and may be worded slightly differently.

Everything is filled in – click through and read why.

1. Uploading ID Document Page 证件资料页上传

Type of ID Document

证件类型 · required

Ordinary Passport – the normal passport. The other types are for diplomats, officials and seafarers.

Options: Ordinary Passport · Diplomatic Passport · Service Passport · Passport for Public Affairs · Seaman's Book · Other

Upload ID Document Page

上传证件资料页 · required

A photo of the passport page with your picture, taken with the camera button or picked from your files. The form reads your name, date of birth, nationality and passport number from it.

Common mistake: Glare on the page or a cut-off bottom edge. The two lines of letters and <<< at the bottom (the machine-readable zone) must be sharp – that is what the form reads.

2. Basic Information Filling 基本信息填报

Last Name

英文姓 · required

Filled in from your photo. Check it against the machine-readable zone at the bottom of the passport page, not against the printed name above it.

Common mistake: Typing letters with accents. The form only keeps A–Z and silently deletes Ü, É, Ø or Ñ – MÜLLER becomes MLLER. Write the name as in the machine-readable zone: MUELLER.

First Name

英文名 · optional

All your given names, as in the machine-readable zone. The form lets it stay empty only for people with a single name.

Common mistake: Dropping a middle name that is in the passport.

Gender

性别 · required

As in the passport.

Options: Male · Female

Date of Birth

出生日期 · required

Three pickers in the order Year – Month – Day.

Common mistake: Swapping day and month when correcting it by hand – the form runs year, month, day, not day, month, year.

Country/Region of Citizenship

国家/地区 · required

The country that issued the passport you travel on.

Common mistake: Dual nationals picking the other passport. It must match the one you show at the border.

Passport Number

证件号码 · required

Read from the photo. Compare it digit by digit with your passport.

Common mistake: Letter O read as zero, I as 1, or the other way round.

Entry Transportation Mode

入境交通方式 · required

Flight if you fly in. Train or Automobile/On Foot if you cross from Hong Kong or Macao over land.

Options: Flight · Train · Vessel · Automobile · On Foot · Automobile and On Foot

Arrival Flight/Train/Vessel Number

入境航班/车次/船次 · only sometimes

Required when the transport mode is Flight.

The flight that lands in mainland China, as on your boarding pass: airline code and number, no space – CA932, not CA 932.

Common mistake: Entering your connecting flight. Frankfurt–Beijing–Xi’an means you enter China in Beijing, so it is the Frankfurt–Beijing flight and Beijing as the city of entry.

City of Entry

入境城市 · required

The city where you first land in mainland China – not your final destination.

Port of Entry

入境口岸 · required

The airport (or border crossing). The list opens once city and transport mode are set.

Common mistake: Picking the wrong airport in a city with two: Beijing has Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX), Shanghai has Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA). The code is on your ticket.

3. Selecting Entry Category 入境类别选择

You may be eligible for the following entry policies, please select according to your needs:

您可能适用于以下入境政策,请您根据您的需要选择: · required

One tile per category the immigration system offers for your nationality and airport. Visa-free passports: Visa-Free Policy. Chinese visa in the passport: Ordinary Entry Filling.

Common mistake: Choosing 240-hour transit although you are visa-free anyway. Transit caps your departure date and requires a ticket on to a third country.

4. Personal Information Filling 个人信息填报

Chinese Name

中文姓名 · optional

Leave it empty unless you have an official Chinese name, for example on an earlier Chinese visa.

Country/Region of Birth

出生国家/地区 · required

The country you were born in. The city box next to it is only mandatory if you were born in China.

Contact Number

联系电话 · required

Your mobile number with the country code. The form keeps only + and digits, so 07700 900123 from the UK becomes +447700900123.

Common mistake: Keeping the leading 0 after the country code (+4407700…), or leaving the country code out.

Email

电子邮箱 · optional

Optional, but fill it in: the receipt can be sent there, and an emailed copy is your backup if the phone dies.

Do you hold a valid visa or other entry permit?

是否持有有效签证等入境许可 · required

No if you are visa-free or in transit, Yes if a Chinese visa is in your passport. The category you picked sets it for you.

Options: Yes · No

Entry Policy Selection

入境政策选择 · only sometimes

Shown when you answer No to the visa question.

The visa-free policy you chose on the category screen; it is already selected.

Visa Number

签证号码 · only sometimes

Shown when you answer Yes to the visa question.

The number of the Chinese visa you enter on, up to 18 characters.

Passport ever lost/stolen

证件是否曾遗失或被盗 · only sometimes

Only asked in the transit categories.

Whether this passport was ever reported lost or stolen – normally No.

Options: Yes · No

5. Travel Information Filling 行程信息填报

Purpose of Entry

入境事由 · required

Sightseeing/Leisure for a holiday, Conference/Business for trade fairs and meetings, Visiting Friends/Relatives for family visits.

Options: Sightseeing/Leisure · Conference/Business · Visit · Visiting Friends/Relatives · Work · Study · Permanent Residence · Return to Country of Residence · Others

Date of Entry

入境日期 · required

The day you land in China, in Chinese time. The picker offers dates from today onwards.

Common mistake: Overnight flights: leaving London on 20 March and landing in Beijing on 21 March means 21 March.

Destination Cities in China

在华目的城市 · required

The city where you will stay longest on this trip.

Cities of Transit in China

在华经停城市 · optional

Other cities on your route – the form takes up to three.

Address in China

在华住址 · required

Province, city and district from a picker, then the street address of your first night in a text box (“e.g., No. 6 East Chang’an Street”). Copy it from your hotel booking; the district – Dongcheng, Pudong, Yanta – is part of the address there.

Common mistake: Only the hotel name, or the district of the airport instead of the hotel. Without a booking yet, the form has nothing to accept.

Do you have any inviting entities or inviters in China?

您是否有中方邀请单位或邀请人 · required

No for tourists. Yes only if a Chinese company or person invited you – then their name and phone number.

Options: Yes · No

Confirmed Departure Itinerary

是否确定出境行程 · required

Yes if your flight out is booked – then date, flight number, city and airport of departure. In the transit categories the departure details are mandatory.

Common mistake: Entering the flight home for 240-hour transit: transit means flying on to a third country.

Options: Yes · No

6. Accompanying Person (s) Filling 同行人信息填报

Need to help your companion fill the form?

是否需要帮助同行人填报? · optional

Add family members or friends you fill in for. Each needs a photo of their own passport page, and all must have the same nationality as you.

Common mistake: A couple with two different passports: the form refuses the companion. Each fills in their own card.

I have read and agree to the above statements

已阅读并同意以上声明 · required

Tick the box under the declaration, then sign with your finger in the signature area. On the computer version you also copy the statement into a box – the “One-click Input” button does it for you.

7. The Entry Declaration Receipt 入境填报回执

Entry Declaration Receipt for Foreigner

外国人入境填报回执 · required

Your receipt with a QR code, your name, passport number, city and port of entry and the date. Use “Download to Local” and “Send to Email”, and take a screenshot as well.

Which entry category to pick

After the basic details the form shows a few tiles – the entry categories the immigration system offers for your nationality at that airport. The category also answers the visa question on the next screen. Currently 56 countries are on China’s visa-free list (most of them for 30 days, until 31 Dec 2026), and 12 more get 240-hour transit only – see the visa check for your passport.

Tile on the formPick it ifDeparture date
Visa-Free PolicyYour passport is on China’s visa-free list and you stay within its days – the usual choice for most European passports.Within your visa-free days (30 for most)
240-Hour Visa-Free Transit PolicyNo visa, but you fly on to a third country (not back where you came from) within the transit time and stay in the permitted regions.Within 10 days, to a third country
24-Hour Visa-Free Transit PolicyA connection of under 24 hours where you leave the airport. Staying airside, you don’t need an arrival card at all.Within 24 hours
Ordinary Entry FillingYou have a Chinese visa (or residence permit) in your passport. As your visa allows

The mistake to avoid: picking 240-hour transit although your passport is visa-free. It caps your departure at 10 days and needs a ticket on to a third country – Visa-Free Policy has neither condition.

Five ways to fill it in

All five end in the same record. For most readers the website is the easiest – nothing to install, no Chinese account.

How to spot a fake arrival card site

Search for “China arrival card” and the first results are often ads for agencies that charge for the same free form – we have seen prices from about 30 to 70 dollars or euros. They type your details into the official form for you. China’s National Immigration Administration warned about fake sites on 5 December 2025, and repeated the warning in its report to the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2026.

  • ✓The address starts with https://s.nia.gov.cn/. Domains ending in .gov.cn belong to the Chinese government.
  • ✓The official form never asks for a card number, a “service fee” or an “express” option.
  • ✓There is no approval to wait for – you get your receipt straight after submitting.

Who doesn’t need an arrival card

The form’s instructions page lists 8 groups. Being visa-free is not one of them, and neither is booking an organised tour as an individual traveller.

  1. 1. Holders of a Chinese permanent residence card (the “China green card”).

On the form: “Foreigners with valid Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card of People's Republic of China.”

  2. 2. Non-Chinese permanent residents of Hong Kong or Macao travelling on their Home Return Permit.

On the form: “Foreigners with valid Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents(Non-Chinese).”

  3. 3. A connection of under 24 hours where you stay airside and don’t pass immigration.

On the form: “Foreigners transiting directly within 24 hours without leaving the restricted area of the port.”

  4. 4. Members of tour groups entering on a group visa or a group visa exemption – not individual travellers on an organised tour.

On the form: “Members of foreign tourist groups who are visa-free or holding group visa.”

  5. 5. Airline, ship and train crew on duty.

On the form: “Foreign crew members, drivers and other employees of transport vehicles.”

  6. 6. Cruise passengers who come and go on the same ship.

On the form: “Foreigners who enter by cruise ship and return with the original cruise.”

  7. 7. Official delegations whose documents are handed in together.

On the form: “Individuals eligible for the courteous treatment of centralized submission of entry and exit documents.”

  8. 8. Registered users of the automated e-gates – in practice foreign residents of China who have enrolled.

On the form: “Foreigners who enter through the E-channel.”

After submitting, and at the airport

The last screen is the “Entry Declaration Receipt for Foreigner” with a QR code, your name, passport number, city and port of entry and the date of entry. Tap “Download to Local”, use “Send to Email”, and take a screenshot as well – at the immigration counter you may have no signal.

If your flight, arrival airport or first address changes after you submitted, fill in the card again with the new details: the receipt shows city, port and date of entry, and they should match your actual arrival.

In the hall there is one more step before the counter: foreigners aged 14 to 70 have their fingerprints taken on entry. At Beijing airport there is a row of self-service kiosks for it, signed “Fingerprint Self-collection”, next to the arrival card kiosks.

A row of eleven self-service kiosks under a sign reading Fingerprint Self-collection
Fingerprint kiosks in the same hall.

The arrival card is only for immigration. Straight after it comes customs, where most travellers need no form at all – see China customs allowances.

In a hotel, registering your stay with the police is done for you at check-in. If you stay with friends or in a private flat, you register within 24 hours. Beijing has put this online: a poster in the arrival hall points to the city police’s self-registration site (marked “trial operation”), where you upload a photo and fill in the details.

FAQ

Is the China arrival card free?

Yes. Filling in the arrival card on the official form at s.nia.gov.cn costs nothing. China's National Immigration Administration warned in December 2025 that fake websites were charging travellers for it – any site that asks for payment is not the official one.

Where do I fill in the China digital arrival card online?

On s.nia.gov.cn/ArrivalCardFillingPC/, the official site of China's National Immigration Administration (the form is titled “Arrival Card Filling”). On a phone the address opens the phone version by itself. The same form is in the “NIA 12367” app and in the WeChat and Alipay mini-programs.

How far in advance can I fill in the China arrival card?

The official form's date picker offers entry dates from today up to 3 months ahead (checked 2 Oct 2026). Many guides say 72 hours – the form itself doesn't limit it to that. Fill it in once your flight and first hotel are fixed, ideally in the week before you fly.

Do I need the arrival card if I can enter China visa-free?

Yes. Visa-free entry doesn't exempt you. Only 8 groups are exempt – permanent residents, holders of a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao residents, airside transit under 24 hours, tour groups on a group visa, crew, cruise passengers staying with their ship, official delegations and enrolled e-gate users.

Can I fill in the arrival card for my whole family?

Yes. After your own details the form asks “Need to help your companion fill the form?” – you can add up to 10 companions, each with a photo of their own passport page. They must have the same nationality as you; a family with two different passports fills in one card per nationality.

What if I didn't fill in the arrival card before the flight?

Nothing goes wrong. At the airport you can scan the arrival card QR code with your phone, use a kiosk in the immigration hall, or fill in a paper card. Filling it in beforehand just saves you that queue.

Is there a German version of the arrival card form?

No. The form has 13 interface languages – Chinese, English, Russian, French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Mongolian, Burmese, Thai and Vietnamese. German, Dutch or Italian speakers use the English version.

My name has an umlaut or accent. What do I type?

The name as it appears in the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your passport page – MUELLER for MÜLLER, for example. The phone version of the form deletes every letter outside A–Z, so typing Ü leaves MLLER.

Does the arrival card replace the customs declaration?

No, they are separate. The arrival card is for immigration. Customs only wants a declaration if you carry something on its list – most travellers go through the green channel without any form.
