FAQ
Is Shenyang worth visiting?
Yes, for two days, especially if you are travelling through the Northeast by train. It has a smaller version of the Forbidden City from before the Qing moved to Beijing, two imperial tombs on the UNESCO list, a warlord’s mansion, a Korean quarter and some of the best street life in the region. It is an industrial city of about nine million, not a pretty one — the sights are islands in a large, busy place.
How many days do you need in Shenyang?
Two. One for the old walled city — Zhang’s Mansion, the east-gate market and Zhongjie in the evening, plus Mukden Palace if you want to go in — and one for Beiling Park early in the morning, then Xita and the railway quarter. Add half a day for the 9.18 Museum and Fuling, neither of which we have been to. If the palace is on your list, avoid Monday: it is closed except in July and August.
Can you visit the BMW plant in Shenyang?
Plant Tiexi takes visitors only by prior registration; turning up at the gate does not work. We have not yet checked how, or how far ahead, a private visitor can register. Without registration you see only the forecourt with its fountains and sculptures.
Which German companies are in Shenyang?
The most visible is BMW: its joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive runs three vehicle plants in Shenyang — Dadong, Tiexi and Lydia — which BMW calls the BMW Group’s largest production site worldwide. The supplier ZF builds electric-drive components in the city. We do not keep a complete list.
Is Shenyang close to Beijing?
About 630 km north-east in a straight line. The high-speed line between them is reported at about two and a half hours on the fastest trains; most take longer. It is the natural first stop north of Beijing on the way to Harbin.
Is Shenyang close to North Korea?
The border is about 220 km to the south-east, at Dandong on the Yalu River. Shenyang itself is an ordinary Chinese city; the connection you notice is the large Korean community and the Korean signs in Xita.
Is Shenyang in Manchuria?
Yes. “Manchuria” is the old English name for what China calls Dongbei, the Northeast: the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang. Shenyang, capital of Liaoning, was the Manchu capital as Mukden before the Qing took Beijing in 1644, and Mukden is still the name you find in older English books.
Which station do I need — Shenyang, Shenyang North or Shenyang South?
Whichever is printed on your ticket; they are three different places. Shenyang (沈阳站) is the old red-brick station in the centre, on Metro Line 1 — confusingly, many locals call it the “South Station”. Shenyang North (沈阳北站) is north of the old city on Lines 2 and 4. Shenyang South (沈阳南站) is a high-speed station out in Hunnan, south of the river, on Line 4. Allow time if you have to cross between them.
How do I get from Shenyang airport to the city?
Metro Line 2 runs from under Terminal 3 straight to Shenyang North. For the old city or Shenyang Station, change to Line 1 at Qingnian Dajie — reports put the airport to Shenyang Station at about an hour. Fares are by distance, from 2 CNY. Airport Bus Line 2 goes to the coach station at Shenyang Station.
How cold is Shenyang in winter?
January averages -6 °C by day and -18 °C at night, and daytime highs stay below freezing from December to February. It is a dry, often sunny cold. Come dressed for it — a down coat, hat and gloves — and it is perfectly manageable; indoors is heated hard.
Shenyang or Dalian? Shenyang or Harbin?
They do different things. Shenyang has the Qing imperial sights and the best food streets; Dalian, an hour and a half south by train, is the seaside city with beaches and a Russian- and Japanese-era centre; Harbin, two hours north, is the Russian-built city and the place for the winter ice festival. On one high-speed line, they make a natural Northeast loop.
Is there halal food in Shenyang?
Yes — as anywhere in China, the easiest option is a Lanzhou beef-noodle shop with the green 清真 (qīngzhēn, halal) sign, and Shenyang has a long-established Hui Muslim community. We have not checked individual halal restaurants, so we do not list any.
Do I need a visa to visit Shenyang?
South Korean and Japanese passport holders are visa-free for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, as are German and many other European passports; Singaporeans have a permanent mutual waiver of 30 days. Many other nationalities can use the 10-day visa-free transit through Shenyang Taoxian airport when travelling on to a third country. Check your own passport on our visa check page.
