Chinese Grand Prix 2027 in Shanghai

Contains affiliate links · What does that mean?

Formula 1 comes to Shanghai from 16 to 18 April 2027, round 5 of 24, one week after Suzuka. It is a standard weekend with no sprint, so Sunday’s 56-lap race is the one that counts. Tickets for 2027 are not on sale yet. Last year they went on sale in December and every seat was sold. Below: the circuit with all its grandstands, the race start in your time zone, what tickets cost in 2026, and how to get there by metro.

The Shanghai International Circuit and its grandstands

5.451 km and 16 turns on former rice fields in Jiading, north-west Shanghai, opened in 2004. Hermann Tilke based the layout on 上 (shàng), the first character of Shanghai. Two “snails” are its signature: turns 1 to 4, which keep turning right and then left, and turns 11 to 13 at the far end. Between them comes the 1.2 km back straight into the turn 14 hairpin. Tap a grandstand to see which turns it looks at, tap a turn, or ride a lap.

1Long rightThe start of the first “snail”: a fast right-hander, about 185 km/h, that keeps tightening and goes blind in the middle. On lap 1 the whole field arrives here at once.0.3
2Tightening rightThe end of the long right-hander that began at turn 1, slower all the time.0.5
3Left hairpinA slow left-hand hairpin. Turns 3 and 4 are taken at about 105 km/h.0.6

5KinkA flat-out right-hand kink on the way to turn 6.1.2
6HairpinA second-gear right-hand hairpin with plenty of run-off: braking, and a chance to overtake.1.4
7Fast leftThe first half of a high-speed left-right chicane: about 160 km/h at the slowest point and around 3 g sideways.1.8
8Fast rightThe second half of the chicane.2.2

12RightThe kerbs matter here and the grip is low.3.1
13Long rightA very long right-hander that keeps opening up onto the back straight. Get it right and you are fast all the way down the 1.2 km to turn 14.3.2
14HairpinA second-gear hairpin at the end of the back straight: the hardest braking on the lap and the main place to overtake. Grandstands H and K are on either side.4.6
15RightA short right-hander out of the hairpin.4.7
16Last cornerA fourth-gear left-hander onto the pit straight, with a quick tap on the brakes. The pit lane begins here.5.0

Our own drawing, north up, from OpenStreetMap: the lap, the pit lane, grandstands A, B, H and K and the metro station are where the map puts them (our lap measures 5.445 km, F1 gives 5.451 km). Grandstand E is the set of unnamed stands beside turns 11 to 13. The turn numbers are placed by us. Which turns you see from each stand is from fan guides, not from a visit. The grass areas are not drawn.

What time is the Chinese Grand Prix?

Friday 16 April: practice 1 and 2. Saturday 17: practice 3 and qualifying. Sunday 18: the race. F1 has not given the times for 2027. It published the 2025 times in early February. Qualifying and the race started at 15:00 Shanghai time in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and that is what we show until the official times are out. Shanghai is on UTC+8 all year, without summer time.

Official sale: Juss Sports

The promoter, Shanghai Juss Sports, sells in the Juss Sports app (久事体育) and its WeChat and Alipay mini programs, and for buyers abroad through an international site. In 2026 sales opened at 11:00 Beijing time (03:00 in London) on 11 December.

F1 and hospitality

F1’s ticketing site has a waiting list for 2027 general admission and links to the Paddock Club and F1 Experiences packages (grandstand seat plus extras). It says all tickets need full passport details, registered several weeks before the race.

Real name, passport

Each ticket carries a visitor’s name, passport (or ID) number and phone number, entered when you buy. Bring the same passport on the day. Every person needs a ticket, children too. The organiser advises against bringing children under 3.

Some sites with official-sounding names already list 2027 grandstands but say in their own terms that they are not connected with Formula 1. Resellers often charge two to three times the face value. Buy from Juss Sports or F1.

Sale day: be ready

The 2027 sale will again be through Juss Sports, in December, on a date not announced yet. Seats go within minutes, so Chinese fans prepare like for a concert sale. Their advice, plus what you need as a buyer from abroad. Your ticks stay in this browser.

Tips from Chinese fans on social media, not from the organiser. We have not bought tickets for this race ourselves.

Paddock Club: already on sale through agencies

The only 2027 tickets you can buy today are hospitality packages. The Paddock Club sits above the pit garages: a day there includes its viewing area, food and drink, screens showing the race and a walk down the pit lane at set times. In 2026 the organiser’s three-day Paddock Club ticket cost 42,800 CNY (about US$6,300). One travel agency in Malaysia advertised these 2027 prices on 26 October 2026:

DayList priceEarly-bird price

An agency’s offer per person, not F1’s or the organiser’s price list. The agency lists last year’s benefits for the same price level, the 2027 details are up to the organiser. F1 sells the Paddock Club itself through its ticketing site.

Prices: 2026. What you see from each stand: from fan guides and our map, not from a visit. Distances are straight lines from the station on our map. The walk is longer.

Getting there by metro

The circuit has its own metro station: Shanghai Circuit (上海赛车场) on Line 11, a few minutes’ walk from the main grandstand. Line 11 runs through the city centre (Jiaotong University, Xujiahui, Jiangsu Road) and splits in two in Jiading. The circuit is on the Huaqiao branch.

Take the right train

Board a Line 11 train towards Huaqiao (花桥), not towards Jiading North (嘉定北). If you are on the wrong one, get off before Jiading Xincheng (嘉定新城) and change on the same platform. Allow about an hour from the city centre.

Race weekend trains

In 2026 the metro ran extra trains: every 6 minutes on Friday instead of 10–12, and every 4 minutes at the busiest times on Saturday and Sunday, with bilingual volunteers at the station. After the race, wait half an hour: the queues are long.

Paying for the metro

Tap a foreign credit card at the gates, or use Alipay. Fares, the day pass and the airport links are on our Shanghai metro page.

Where to stay

Hotels near the circuit fill up fast and get expensive on race weekend. Staying in the city near a Line 11 station (Xujiahui or Jiaotong University) gives you a direct train and the rest of Shanghai in the evening. Ideas for those days: our Shanghai city guide.

Line 11 times and intervals are from 2026 (Shentong Metro via Shanghai Bendibao). The 2027 arrangements, shuttles and road closures will be announced before the race.

Winners and the 2026 race

The first Chinese Grand Prix was held on 26 September 2004 and won by Rubens Barrichello. Apart from 2020 to 2023, when it was cancelled because of COVID-19, it has been held every year, and the contract runs to 2030. The race lap record is still Michael Schumacher’s 1:32.238 from that first year.

Most wins in Shanghai

  • Lewis Hamilton6
  • Fernando Alonso2
  • Nico Rosberg2

Lewis Hamilton has won here 6 times, more than anyone else. Mercedes has the most wins as a team.

2026: a first win

Kimi Antonelli, 19, took pole, the win and the fastest lap for Mercedes, ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, whose third place was his first Grand Prix podium for Ferrari. Russell won the sprint. The organiser counted 230,000 spectators over three days, up from 220,000 in 2025, and 14 % came from abroad (up from 11 %).

FAQ

When is the Chinese Grand Prix 2027?

From Friday 16 to Sunday 18 April 2027 at the Shanghai International Circuit, round 5 of 24 in the 2027 Formula 1 calendar, a week after Japan. It is a standard weekend without a sprint: practice on Friday, practice and qualifying on Saturday, the race on Sunday.

What time does the Chinese Grand Prix start?

F1 has not published the 2027 times yet. In 2024, 2025 and 2026 the race started at 15:00 Shanghai time. If it does so again, that is 08:00 in London, 09:00 in Berlin and Paris, 03:00 in New York and 17:00 in Sydney on Sunday 18 April.

When do tickets go on sale?

Not announced yet. For 2026 the prices were published on 5 December 2025 and sales opened on 11 December 2025 at 11:00 Beijing time, in the Juss Sports app and its WeChat and Alipay mini programs. Every ticket, the Paddock Club included, was sold out before the race. For 2027, Chinese fans expect the sale in December again, through Juss Sports. Only hospitality packages are on sale so far.

How much are tickets?

2027 prices are not out. In 2026 a three-day grass ticket cost 480 CNY, a grandstand seat at the turn 14 hairpin 330 CNY on Friday and 1,450 CNY on Sunday, the main grandstand 2,230 CNY–2,790 on Sunday, and the Paddock Club 42,800 CNY.

Can foreigners buy tickets?

Yes. Tickets are in your real name: you enter each visitor’s name and passport number and bring the passport on the day. The official seller is Juss Sports, the promoter, which also has an international site. F1’s own ticketing site has a waiting list, and F1 Experiences sells hospitality packages. Resale sites charge far more than the official price.

How do I get to the Shanghai International Circuit?

By metro Line 11 to Shanghai Circuit station (上海赛车场), next to the main grandstand. Take a train towards Huaqiao (花桥), not Jiading North. On the 2026 race weekend trains ran every 4 minutes at the busiest times. The circuit is in Jiading, about an hour from the city centre.

Do children need a ticket?

Yes, every visitor needs their own ticket whatever their age. The organiser advises against bringing children under 3. Bring ear protection for children.

What is the weather like in mid-April?

Mild: Shanghai averages 22 °C by day and 14 °C at night in April, and it can rain. The 2026 race in March was cloudy, 16 °C at most. Grandstand B and the lawns have no roof.

Do I need a visa?

Many passports could enter China visa-free for 30 days in 2026, but that scheme runs to 31 December 2026 and its extension into 2027 has not been announced yet. Check the visa rules for your passport before you book.
