The best time to visit China is April/May and September/October: in that window, 19 of the 20 cities tracked here have at least one month in the 15–26 °C daily-mean comfort range. That wide spread is a product of the country's sheer size and varied terrain, from coastal plains to the Tibetan Plateau – see the geography and location page for the bigger picture. Kunming stays comfortable from March through October, while Harbin is not recommended from December through February, with daily means below -14 °C.

March to May: Spring
18 of the 20 cities tracked here have at least one spring month in the 15–26 °C comfort range. Sanya already hits a 30.5 °C daily mean in May, while Harbin is still at -3 °C in March.
June to August: Summer
Only 10 of the 20 cities still reach the comfort range in summer – the east and south typically run hotter (Shanghai up to 31.5 °C). Lhasa stays mild throughout, with a summer low of 17.5 °C, thanks to its position on the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau – more on the terrain behind that on the mountains, lakes, and rivers page.
September and October: Autumn
As in spring, 18 of the 20 cities have at least one month in the comfort range. Sanya stays warm at up to 30 °C, while Harbin cools to a 6.5 °C daily mean by October. This window also overlaps with the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing, held alongside Golden Week. November to February: Winter
Only 6 of the 20 cities still reach the comfort range in winter. Harbin drops to a -19.5 °C daily mean, while Sanya in the south stays mild at up to 27.5 °C.
Best Time to Visit China: Month by Month
The four seasons above give the rough shape – for finer planning it's worth checking the individual month, since the comfort zone shifts across several regions from one month to the next.
January
Only the far south is warm enough. Sanya (23.5 °C daily mean) and Shenzhen (16.5 °C) sit in the comfort zone, with Guangzhou and Xiamen close behind at around 14.5 °C. The rest of the country, from Beijing to Kunming, is too cold for classic sightseeing this month.
February
Similar to January, only the south stays mild – Sanya, Shenzhen and Guangzhou fall within the comfort range. If you're traveling for Spring Festival 2026 (17–23 February), expect holiday crowds and closures nationwide; see the public holidays page for details.
March
The south tips into the comfort zone – Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Chongqing, Kunming and Guilin now sit between 15.5 and 21 °C. Sanya, at 26.5 °C, is already close to too warm. Beijing and the north stay cool at around 9 °C.
April
The most comfortable month of the year overall – 13 of the 20 cities fall in the ideal range, from Beijing (16.5 °C) to Shanghai (18 °C) to Guangzhou (24 °C). Not a single city in this dataset rates as "not recommended" in April.
May
Nearly the whole country offers pleasant travel weather except the tropical south: Sanya tips into "too hot" territory at around 30 °C, while the northwest (Dunhuang, Urumqi) and northeast (Shenyang, Harbin) are ideal at 16.5–19.5 °C.
June
The northeast and northwest take the lead – Shanghai, Chengdu, Dunhuang, Urumqi and Shenyang move into the ideal range, while the south (Guangzhou, Shenzhen) is already brushing the upper limit at around 30 °C. Sanya is too hot for classic sightseeing in June.
July
Peak summer – only the northeast (Shenyang, Harbin), the far northwest (Urumqi) and the high-altitude southwest (Kunming, Lijiang, Lhasa) stay within the comfort range. Nearly half of the 20 cities are rated too hot this month.
August
About as hot as July. The most comfortable options remain the northwest (Dunhuang, Urumqi), the northeast (Shenyang, Harbin) and the southwestern highlands (Kunming, Lijiang, Lhasa).
September
The heat breaks – 15 of the 20 cities are back in the ideal range, from Shanghai (26 °C) to Beijing (22 °C) to Lhasa (16 °C). Only the tropical south (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Sanya) stays warm at 28–30 °C.
October
Along with spring, the second-best month to travel – 12 cities are ideal, led by Guangzhou (25.5 °C) and Xiamen (25 °C). Only Harbin, in the far northeast, has already cooled below the comfort range.
November
The south stays mild (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Guilin, Shanghai), while the rest of the country cools noticeably – six of the 20 cities, mostly in the north, already fall below the comfort range.
December
As in January, only the far south stays comfortably warm – Sanya, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Guangzhou. The rest of China, especially the north and northeast, is too cold for relaxed sightseeing.

Rainfall, humidity, and crowd levels are deliberately excluded, as we don't have consistently verified data for those across all cities.

FAQ
What determines the "Ideal / Comfortable / Not recommended" rating?
Solely the historical daily mean temperature (average of daily high and low): 15–26 °C counts as ideal for sightseeing, 8–15 °C or 26–30 °C as comfortable with some limitations, below or above that as not recommended. Rainfall and humidity aren't factored in.
Is Kunming really ideal all year round?
Kunming sits at around 1,900 m elevation on the Yunnan plateau and is therefore called the "city of eternal spring." That holds with a caveat: from March to October, the daily mean stays in the 15–26 °C comfort range throughout, while in the cooler months (November to February) it drops to 10–14 °C – mild by China's standards, but not "ideal year-round" by our strict comfort definition.
Why is Harbin rated "not recommended" in winter, even though the Ice Festival happens there in January?
The rating assesses pure sightseeing comfort climate, not suitability for a specific event. Harbin's Ice and Snow Festival is an attraction precisely because of the extreme cold (daily average below -19 °C in January) – anyone traveling for it needs appropriately warm gear.
