How to Order Food on a Chinese High-Speed Train: Scan, Pick a Station, Get It at Your Seat

Contains affiliate links · What does that mean?

On a long train ride in China you don’t have to live on instant noodles. Scan the QR code on your seat with WeChat and you can order from restaurants in the stations ahead – KFC, McDonald’s, beef noodles, rice boxes – and the food is brought to your seat. The app is in Chinese only. Practise it here first, step by step, on our screenshots of a real order: train G803 from Beijing South, food from Xuzhou East, ¥50.50 (≈ $7.46) for a rice dish with cola, delivery included.

What you need: WeChat with WeChat Pay and an international card linked, your train ticket (for the coach and seat number) and a mobile number from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan – the form accepts no other country codes. WeChat is easier to set up at home – it is on the China travel checklist.

Ordering food on a Chinese train: the short version

  1. 1Scan the seat codeWeChat → ⊕ at the top right → 扫一扫 (Scan). It opens the 12306 mini program.
  2. 2Train and stopsType the train number from your ticket; the date is today. Mark where you get on (起) and off (终).
  3. 3Pick a stationFood comes from restaurants in a station on your route – at your seat about 30 minutes after the stop.
  4. 4Order before the deadline截止下单: at Xuzhou East 60–90 minutes before the train got there.
  5. 5Enter your seatCoach and seat exactly as on your ticket, a name, and a mobile number from China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan. Delivery ¥8 (≈ $1.18).
  6. 6Pay and stay putWeChat Pay, then wait in your seat – staff only call if they can’t find you. Free cancellation until 截止退单.

Practise ordering food on the train: the 12306 mini program, step by step

The phone screen works like the real mini program: scan the seat code, mark your stations, pick Xuzhou East, open a restaurant, fill your cart, enter your seat and pay – with the real restaurants, dishes, prices and deadlines from our order. Every step also has our real screenshots; tap the numbered dots for a translation. Nothing is actually ordered.

Step 1 of 9

Scan the code on your seat with WeChat

扫一扫 · sǎo yi sǎo

On the seat you will find a QR code for ordering food. Scan it with WeChat: the ⊕ at the top right of the chats screen, then 扫一扫 (sǎo yi sǎo, scan). It opens the food ordering of 铁路12306, China Railway’s own mini program inside WeChat – nothing to install, no account to create.

Tap ⊕ at the top right of WeChat.

Use WeChat’s own scanner, not the camera app. No code on your seat, or it won’t scan? Search for 铁路12306 in WeChat’s search bar, open the mini program and look for food ordering (订餐) – it starts at the same screen.

Screenshots: our own, taken on 17 October 2026 for train G803, from the 铁路12306 (China Railway 12306) mini program in WeChat. Restaurant logos and dish photos belong to the restaurants. Another passenger’s name and the seat QR code are blurred. The meal photo shows a ¥39 (≈ $5.76) box we ordered through 12306 in 2023. Dollar amounts are rough conversions at 6.77 CNY to the US dollar (31 July 2026); you pay in yuan. Restaurants, prices and times change with the train, the station and the day.

What arrives at your seat: our ¥39 12306 meal

This box came to our seat on a high-speed train after we ordered it through 12306: a breaded chicken cutlet and curry with shrimp on rice, cabbage on the side, a spoon, chopsticks in a China Railway sleeve – ¥39 (≈ $5.76). Tap the dots to see what is in it, then check what your budget buys from the restaurants we saw at Xuzhou East.

How to order a meal to your train seat: the nine steps

  1. 1

Scan the code on your seat with WeChat · 扫一扫

Open WeChat, tap ⊕ at the top right, then 扫一扫 (Scan), and scan the railway catering QR code on your seat. It opens the 12306 mini program’s food ordering – nothing to install.

  2. 2

Type in the train number and date · 车次 · 出发日期

The first screen asks for the train number (车次) and the date. The seat code does not fill them in: type the number from your ticket, for example G803; the date is set to today (今天). Then tap 开始订餐 (start ordering).

  3. 3

Mark where you get on and off · 起 · 终

The train’s timetable opens. Mark your boarding station (起) and the station where you get off (终): the app only offers food that reaches you while you are on board.

  4. 4

Choose the station that delivers · 配送车站

The food comes from restaurants in a station along your route: it is put on the train there and brought to your seat about 30 minutes later. Pick a station in the strip at the top; stops marked 已过下单时间 are closed for orders.

  5. 5

    Pick a restaurant · 选餐厅

Each station lists its restaurants – chains like KFC, McDonald’s and Yonghe King next to Chinese noodle and rice shops – with rating, average spend per person, the ¥8 (≈ $1.18) delivery fee and the time the food reaches your seat.

  6. 6

Add food – before the deadline · 截止下单

Tap + to add dishes. At the top, each restaurant shows its order deadline (截止下单) and the last time you can cancel (截止退单) – at Xuzhou East, 60 to 90 minutes before the train got there.

  7. 7

Fill in your name, seat and phone number · 确认订单

On 确认订单 (confirm order), enter a name, your coach and seat (车厢席位) exactly as on your ticket, and a mobile number from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan – foreign numbers are not accepted. Check the fees – ¥8 (≈ $1.18) delivery, sometimes a box fee – and tap 立即支付 (pay now).

  8. 8

Pay with WeChat Pay · 微信支付

The payment sheet of WeChat Pay opens by itself. Confirm with your payment password or Face ID – a foreign card linked to WeChat works like anywhere else.

  9. 9

Wait at your seat – the food comes to you · 送餐到座

Staff bring the food to the seat you entered; they only call if they can’t find you there. Your order is under 订单 (orders) at the bottom of the mini program; until the cancellation deadline you can cancel it there for free.

When to order: the deadlines

Train G803 reached Xuzhou East at 18:54; the food was promised for 19:24. Each restaurant sets its own deadlines – this is what they showed on 17 October 2026.

上海兴旅餐饮Shanghai Xinglü Catering – boxed set meals17:54 60 min before17:54 60 min before

The station before, Jinan West (17:46), was already closed for orders in our screenshots: all its restaurants – Yonghe King, Ximaxiang beef noodles, Yonghe Soy Milk, Dawanjing, Burger King – showed 已过下单时间. Their food would have reached the seat at 18:16, 30 minutes after the stop. Yonghe King suggests ordering two hours before the train leaves, Chen Xiang Gui one hour.

Other ways to eat on a Chinese train

  • The trolley. Staff push a cart through the train with boxed meals, snacks and drinks. No app needed – just point.
  • The dining car (餐车, cān chē). Many trains have one, with boxed meals and drinks.
  • Before you board. Big stations are full of fast food, noodle shops and convenience stores. 到店自取 in the same mini program lets you order ahead and collect.
  • Bring your own. Snacks and drinks are fine on board; the coaches have hot-water dispensers, which is why so many passengers carry instant noodles.

In a station restaurant instead? See canteens and fast food or ordering by QR code.

FAQ

Can you order food on a high-speed train in China?

Yes. Scan the QR code on your seat with WeChat, or open the 铁路12306 mini program, and order from restaurants in a station on your route. They put the food on the train at that station and staff bring it to your seat – on our train, G803, 30 minutes after the stop: the train reached Xuzhou East at 18:54 and the food was promised for 19:24.

How early do you have to order food on a Chinese train?

Before the restaurant’s deadline, 截止下单, shown at the top of its page. At Xuzhou East it was 60 minutes before the train arrived for most restaurants and 90 minutes for McDonald’s. Some restaurants suggest ordering one or two hours before the train leaves. A station that comes soon after you board may already be closed: it shows 已过下单时间.

How much does food delivered to your train seat cost?

At Xuzhou East, dishes and set meals cost ¥28–¥88 (≈ $4.14–13.00) and restaurants listed an average of ¥37–53 (≈ $5.47–7.83) per person. On top come a ¥8 (≈ $1.18) delivery fee and, at some restaurants, a box fee – ¥2.50 (≈ $0.37) per item at Yonghe King. There is no minimum order. Our order, a braised pork rice with cola, came to ¥50.50 (≈ $7.46). Dollar amounts are rough conversions at 6.77 CNY to the US dollar (31 July 2026); you pay in yuan.

Is there KFC or McDonald’s on Chinese trains?

Not on board – but you can have it delivered. At Xuzhou East, KFC and McDonald’s were among the nine restaurants delivering to our train, next to Chinese chains for beef noodles, rice dishes and Taiwanese snacks. McDonald’s sells special train sets (乘运款).

Can I pay for train food with a foreign card?

Ordering from WeChat, you pay with WeChat Pay – a foreign Visa or Mastercard linked to WeChat works as it does in shops. Link the card before the trip. Without WeChat Pay, buy from the trolley or the dining car.

Do I need a Chinese phone number to order food on the train?

Yes – or one from Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan. The country-code menu on the form offers only +86, +852, +853 and +886, so a European or American number can’t be entered, and a data-only travel eSIM has no number to give. Staff bring the food to the seat you entered and only call if they can’t find you there. Without such a number, buy from the trolley or the dining car.

Can I cancel a food order on a Chinese train?

Yes, until the cancellation deadline (截止退单) shown on the restaurant’s page and on the order form – “今天 17:24前可免费取消” means free cancellation until 17:24 today. Cancel under 订单 (orders) at the bottom of the mini program.

Where do I find my seat number for the food order?

On your ticket or booking: coach (车) and seat (号), for example 05车12F号 – coach 5, seat 12F. On the form, tap 车厢席位 and choose both. Second-class seat letters run A B C, aisle, D F; there is no E.

Is the 12306 food ordering available in English?

No – the food ordering in the 12306 mini program is in Chinese only, from the station list to the order form. That is why the simulator on this page translates every screen: practise once, and the real thing looks familiar. Dish names are easiest to read with your phone’s camera translation.

What if I don’t use WeChat?

The 12306 app has the same food ordering. Otherwise, the trolley that comes through the train sells boxed meals, snacks and drinks, many trains have a dining car, and every station has shops and restaurants before you board.
